DISTRACTIONS: In August of 2016, while I was walking through Historic Old Town Manassas in Virginia, I noticed this sculpture. Its title is “Distracted.” It was created by Andrea Rivera who had this to say about her sculpture:
I am creating a figurative sculpture that will be covered in multiple bright colors of plastic. The form will be stylized in that it will not feature arms and legs but simply suggest the entire human form. It references our new nature of awareness…which is to say our complete lack of. With its head slightly downturned toward its hand, it’s mimicking our constant staring at our phones while it’s being encased in this bright plastic and seemingly oblivious to it.
By the time I saw this sculpture, the black paint that represented the phone was gone. Ironically, it gave another dimension to the ‘distraction’ represented. It was as though the ‘person’ didn’t even realize that the phone was missing.
Art in the City
Since this struck me as a great contemporary writing prompt, I wanted to learn more. When I researched the background of this sculpture, I learned that the City of Manassas arts group was working with Northern Virginia Community College’s Assistant Professor of Studio Art, Zac Jackson. Together they had displayed sculptures in various locations around the city. Unfortunately, by the time I went back to see the other sculptures, they were no longer there. However, one of the Manassas City websites still has a virtual tour of the Sculptures in the City.
Distractions, Technology and the Writing Life
Distractions come in all shapes and sizes, the cell phone just added another dimension to our distractions. I am constantly inundated and battling stimuli in my environment, which is probably why I enjoy going for walks in nature. It is also probably why my clearest thinking seems to occur in the shower.
